Zipper test: How to determine if a jacket is durable
Check the zipper tape first. Pull it sideways. Stiff like cardboard? It'll rip. Soft but firm? Better. Look for metal teeth, a tight retainer box, and double stitching. Brand names don't guarantee quality. I learned that after a $140 jacket failed in two months.
I learned this the hard way. Bought a heavy denim jacket. Beautiful fabric. Thick stitching. Felt solid in my hands. Wore it for two months. Then the zipper split right down the middle.
Not the teeth. The zipper tape. The fabric part that holds the teeth together. Just ripped open.
The jacket cost one hundred and forty dollars. The zipper cost maybe two.
That's when I started checking zippers first.
What to Look For
Open the jacket. Look at the zipper from the inside. See the little letters and numbers stamped on the back of the slider? That's the brand. YKK. Ideal. Talon. Those are good. No name stamped there? Walk away.
But that's just the start.
Look at the teeth. Are they metal or plastic? Metal lasts longer but can bend. Plastic doesn't bend but can crack in cold weather. I live in Portland. It's not that cold. I still prefer metal.
Here's the real test though.
The Tape Test

Grab the zipper tape. That's the cloth strip sewn into the jacket. Pull it sideways. Not hard. Just a little tug.
Does it feel stiff? Like cardboard? That's cheap. The tape will rip eventually.
Does it feel soft but firm? Like good canvas? That's better.
Now look at where the zipper ends at the bottom. See that metal or plastic box where both sides meet? That's the retainer box. Push on it. Does it wiggle? Cheap. Should be locked in tight.
The Mistake I Made
That jacket I bought? I never checked the zipper tape. Felt the fabric. Looked at the stitching. Assumed the zipper was fine.
After it broke, I cut the jacket open. The zipper tape was glued, not woven. Glued. Like paper with glue on it. No wonder it ripped.
Now I check every zipper. Even on expensive stuff. Especially on expensive stuff.
What Good Looks Like
A durable zipper has:
Metal teeth that line up straight. No gaps. No bent ones.
A slider that moves smooth but not loose. No wobble.
Tape that feels like actual fabric. You can see the weave. You can poke a needle through it.
Stitching that goes through the tape twice. Top and bottom. If it's only stitched once, the tape can peel away.
Quick Test
Zip the jacket all the way up. Pull the bottom of the jacket away from your body. Just a little. Does the zipper hold? Or do you feel it starting to separate at the bottom?
Hold it separates. That's a weak retainer box. Don't buy it.
The Honest Truth
Even good zippers fail eventually. I have a coat from nineteen ninety-eight. YKK zipper. Still works fine. But I've also seen expensive jackets with brand new YKK zippers that felt cheap. Same brand. Different quality.
Brand name doesn't guarantee anything. You still have to look.
Next time you're at a store, just check the zipper first. Five seconds. Pull the tape. Push the box. If it feels cheap, put it back. The rest of the jacket probably is too.
I wish I had done that. Would have saved me a hundred forty dollars and a lot of frustration.
